AIRO is the leading provider of QGIS training in Ireland and has been successfully running QGIS Data for Decisions (D4D) workshops over the past 3 years. QGIS is the leading product available in the Free and Open-Source software (FOSS) GIS community and has a continuously growing number of capabilities that are provided through its core functions and plugins.

Our 'Data for Decisions' workshops are completely based on open-source software (QGIS) and open-source datasets and have been specifically designed for those with an interest in mapping and data analysis.

By using open-source all you need is a laptop and we provide you with everything else you need to get up and running. Our workshops are generally run from AIRO HQ but we also deliver on-site workshops at host organisations (InterTradeIreland, Border Region Authority, Land and Property Services NI, DkIT).

Since launching our D4D workshops in September 2013 we have provided training to over 100 participants from Government departments, local and regional authorities, local partnerships and private sector organisations (economists, planning professions, journalists). 'Data for Decisions' is now also an accredited training course with the Irish Planning Institiute (7 IPI CPD credits).

The workshop includes:

  • Basic introduction to GIS
  • Thorough overview of statistical datasets in Ireland
  • Series of sessions on using QGIS for manipulating and analysing ‘socio-demographic’ spatial datasets

On completion of the one day workshop participants  will have a much greater awareness of spatial data in Ireland and will be able to execute many of the basic functionalities in QGIS such data importing, data management, data analysis and high quality thematic map development.

Data for Decision testimonials

"The contents certainly suited my needs for a preliminary introduction into conveying data through mapping techniques as it is something which I find increasing useful in the stories I write"

Sean McCarthaigh, Senior Reporter - Irish Examiner

"Very good content and level of detail considering limited time available. I learned a lot about data and software that I was not fully aware was available"

Brian Cosgrove, Assistant Fire Officer - Kildare County Council

"The workshop was very relative to the planning department particularly the planning policy section. There is so much information available and I think QGIS is a brilliant tool for making use of the information available and making it presentable and understandable and relative to specific areas of interest"

Lousie Aherne, Forward Planning - Cork City Council
