Over the last number of years AIRO have been involved in a series of detailed environmental analysis projects. Combining our expertise in spatial analysis and data handling with the expert environmental policy knowledge of Dr Ainhoa Gonzalez we now deliver environmental projects at the national and local level across Ireland.

Recent projects included an analysis of wind energy strategies for SEAI, wind energy strategy 'constraints and facilitators' analysis for Kildare Local Authorities and a 3 year EPA Strive 'Environmental Sensitivity Mapping' project.

In late 2013, researchers at NIRSA and AIRO completed a study examining local authority wind energy policy and strategies across Ireland with the objective of identifying commonalities and differences between methodological approaches for selecting preferred and non-preferred areas for wind energy development and the implications for achieving Ireland's renewable energy targets.

The research was commissioned as part of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland's (SEAI) Sustainable Energy RD&D Programme 2013.

The Environmental Sensitivity Mapping (ESM) project aims to deliver an online tool to support environmental assessment processes in Ireland. The project officially started in February 2014 and will run until September 2016. The Environmental Sensitivity Mapping (ESM) project is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency, under the STRIVE Programme (Grant No. 2013-B-FS-4).
